Winter Coconut Oil & Vitamin E Oil Lotion

The extreme cold we are having has made the air so dry that my hands and feet keep cracking.  Moisturizers help some but what I really need is protection from the drying air and this lotion recipe does the trick.
Coconut oil and vitamin E oil make great lotion
You will need coconut oil and Vitamin E oil.
Vitamin E Oil and Coconut Oil for lotion recipe
You will also need some way to combine them.  I used a immersion (stick) mixer/blender but a stand mixer with a whisk or even a fork will do.
Coconut oil and vitamin e oil recipe supplies
The recipe depends on how thick you want the lotion.  If you want a fairly liquid lotion try 1 cup coconut oil and 1 tablespoon Vitamin E oil.  For a thicker lotion cut the Vitamin E oil to 1 teaspoon.  You may want to start with a teaspoon and decide if you want a thinner lotion before adding more.  I also added some lemon essential oil but the essential oil is optional.  The coconut smells wonderful on its own. The lemon with the coconut smells like a tropical drink which made me think of summer and (since our high today will be below zero) that made me happy.
Coconut Oil and Vitamin E Oil ready to mix
Put the oils together and mix until fully emulsified and you cannot feel  solid coconut oil bits in the lotion.  If you are having trouble getting the solid coconut oil to blend nicely with the Vitamin E oil, warm them a bit. You can put the bottom of the mixing bowl into another bowl of hot water.  Make sure to not get any water into your mixing bowl. The heat from the water will heat the mixing bowl and melt any stubborn coconut oil.
Mix coconut oil and Vitamin E Oil for lotion add essential oil
Add your essential oils if using and mix until incorporated.  With my immersion mixer the whole mixing process was only a few minutes.  Store in an air tight jar.
Coconut and E oil winter oil
Use on your hands and feet as needed.  Remember this is not a moisturizer.  There is nothing in this recipe that will draw moisture to your skin.  This is a moisture barrier to prevent the moisture already in your skin from escaping to the dry air.  Also, since it is made of oil, it can make your skin slippery.  You may want to wear socks on your feet for a little while after applying.  This is a very healing lotion full of wonderful micro nutrients and other goodies that are good for you and your skin.

  2. Who doesn't like coconut but it might help tone it down adding the lemon essential oil. I think I love lemon/or orange better. I've read that grapefruit fragrance will make you feel 5-10 years younger! This will firm up correct? I would like to make a batch to put in small 1" plastic hearts to give to my Sunday school ladies for Valentine's. Would this work--you think. A " few of them will probably say they are allergic but they would come up with something if I put chocolate candy in it too.thanks fr your idea. Happy year of the Horse Jan 31?

  12. Wish I had seen your recipe a couple of weeks ago. I made another recipe that also contained baby lotion and aquaphor plus the coconut oil and vitamin e which made for a very greasy concoction. It does feel good once I get it rubbed in, and I've been using it on my feet and immediately putting on socks. I don't know if I should try adding more coconut oil and hope that it is less greasy or just consider I'll be doing a lot of rubbing of my hands to get it blended in.

  19. Great post! I have been using coconut oil for my son's hair and skin because of this extreme cold weather; however, I didn't consider adding Vitamin E to the mix. What a great idea! I'm going to work on mixing it tonight!

Thanks so much for sharing on Turn It Up Tuesday! We love having you! :)

  20. It's very dry here in Western CO so with the furnace running often our skins are even drier. I used Vit. E oil on my knee replacement scars and they are long ones, not pretty. I started putting the oil on the scars as soon as the scars were healed up enuf not to cause any infection. Have to watch not to get infections after knee replacements. I now have thin lines for scars, still visible but not as bad as they would have been had I not used it.
I'm loving this lotion, my feet and hands get so dry and those painful cracks on fingers, ouch. I usually wear at least 2 pair of socks this time of year so my feet keep softer as I put a thick lotion on my feet every day after my shower then again before I go to bed when I put clean socks on again.
Your lotion is certainly easy to make and I'll be making it as soon as I can get the ingredients.
Found your post thru Hit Me with your best shot party, sure glad I did. Happy week

  41. In this generation the main and big problem is how to make our skin healthy and beautiful. I am also a girl and I do agree that maintaining skin health is quite difficult and for that we use many beauty products but still we don’t get our desired result. In my situation I always prefer coconut oil because it actually works like a miracle. Most of us generally use skin softener and moisturizer to make our skin soft but using natural ingredient for skin is one of the best ways to keep your skin hydrated and healthy. If you want to make your skin healthy and glowing I think you should try coconut oil for your skin
